A Hotel Adorned with Kyoto’s Unique Art of Calligraphy Stimulates All of Your Five Senses
ROYAL GALLERY
Beautiful calligraphy adorns the entrance. The creator, Kawao Tomoko, says, “I want people to come to Kyoto, let go of their worries, unwind, and enjoy strolling around the city as if they were children again.”
The Hachijoguchi area, located on the south side of Kyoto Station, is popular among tourists due to its convenient access to Kyoto’s many attractions. The “RIHGA Gran Kyoto”, situated in such a prime location, offers a budget-friendly stay where you can enjoy the beauty of Kyoto with all your five senses. The concept is “‘Omomuki’ (“Atmosphere”), a hotel befitting Kyoto and RIHGA”, and guests can indulge in the artworks, music, and books crafted by Kyoto-based artists.
One such precious piece is the calligraphy created by a Kyoto-based calligrapher, Kawao Tomoko. This large work of art, approximately 3 meters in length, welcomes you as you get off the escalator leading from the entrance to the lobby. Tomoko started calligraphy at the age of 6 and has received numerous awards both in Japan and abroad. She has regularly appeared in the media, including NHK and the BBC, while frequently performing and exhibiting her artwork. This particular calligraphy art adorning the entrance is our second piece generously donated by Tomoko, following her creation for the RIHGA Royal Hotel Kyoto.
The calligraphed character “play” was decided upon discussion, especially taking into consideration that the concept of the hotel’s entertainment services was “Kyo-Yu”, or “Kyoto Play”. Given that the piece was made after the Japanese government declared a state of emergency for COVID-19, Tomoko crafted this piece with a heartfelt desire for a future where people from all corners of the globe can enjoy playing in Kyoto. Tomoko also infused this piece with dynamism and dignified beauty, hoping that people will embrace a special, playful spirit while reflecting on the rich history of Kyoto.
Other notable works of art that adorn the RIHGA Gran Kyoto include “Hoshi ni Negaiwo(Wish Upon a Star)” a piece by Karakamishi: Toto Akihiko of KIRA KARACHO, who inherited Japan’s only Karakami shop that has been in business for more than 400 years. Furthermore, the background music played in the hotel was specially composed by the renowned Kyoto-based guitarist Tanaka Akihiro. The hotel also boasts a library stocked with carefully curated books by “Keibunsha,” a Kyoto bookstore, complemented by ceramics crafted by “Asahi Touan.” Even the hotel staff’s uniforms are made of “Kyoto Denim,” allowing guests to completely immerse themselves in Kyoto’s art scene during their stay.
